    A Poem for a Thursday #177

I didn’t find a lot of information about today’s poet. Robyn Sarah is a Canadian poet and short story writer. She has taught English literature at Champlain Regional College and won a CBC Literary Award for poetry in 1990. It is possible that things will not get better than they are now, or have been known to be. It is possible that we are past the middle now. It is possible that we have crossed the great water without knowing it, and stand now on the other side. Yes: I think that we have crossed it. Now we are being given tickets, and they are not tickets to the show…

    On the Unfairness of Life

Things I have not wanted to do recently: Get out of bed. Go for a walk. Cook. Make stressful phone calls. Have a difficult conversation with someone. Remove a very pretty but unnecessary item from my online shopping cart. Do laundry. Cook again. Go grocery shopping. Things I have done recently: All of the above. Why did no one tell me life was like this? An endless repetition of faintly annoying (though occasionally ramping up to very difficult) items on an endless rotation. Patricia Hampl is an American writer, lecturer, and memoirist. She first became known for A Romantic Education, the memoir of her Czech heritage. She also has written several volumes of poetry. She says of her writing “I think my fundamental instinct, the thing that brought me to writing as a child and beyond, was and remains a sense of wonder, a luminous amazement at existence.” You are stepping off a train. A wet blank night, the smell of cinders. A gust of steam from the engine swirls around the hem of your topcoat, around the hand holding the brown leather valise, the hand that, a moment ago, slicked back the…

    Book Bits and Pieces

Most library holds are paused right now while the library system switches over to a new delivery service. This is sad because I don’t have a constant supply of new and exciting books. However, this is also a very good thing because I am slowly catching up on all the books that have inundated my house over the last few months. I thought a would share a few quick highlights from the books I have read most recently. I am slowly working my way through all of Janice Holt Giles’ books. I read them as a teenager (I am starting to feel like that is a constant refrain in my…
