    A Poem for a Thursday #181

Next year my daughter will be a senior in high school. It is just unbelievable to me. We won’t even talk about how old my son is. Kids. They just insist on growing up. This poem struck a chord with me. My kids aren’t quite ready to leave home but I can see the day coming. Excuse me while I sink into a welter of memories of how adorable my children were. When I taught you at eight to ride a bicycle, loping along beside you as you wobbled away on two round wheels, my own mouth rounding in surprise when you pulled ahead down the curved path of the…

    This and That

My husband just headed out the door for his morning walk but then was back again in about two minutes. He had found a package for me on the doorstep and knew it would brighten my day. Aren’t these lovely? The British Library was kind enough to send them so my thanks to them. I actually read Green for Danger earlier in the year and I can highly recommend it. I am thrilled about The Edinburgh Mystery. My daughter and I were dreaming yesterday of a return trip to Scotland. Hopefully, if we ever make it back our trip will be filled with a little less murder and mayhem than…

    A Poem for a Thursday #180

I featured Barabar Crooker a few months ago but here is another of her poems. The problem with finding a new poet that I like is that then I have a whole slew of poems by that writer that I want to share. Today I am indulging myself by featuring her again. In the Middle of a life that's as complicated as everyone else's, struggling for balance, juggling time. The mantle clock that was my grandfather's has stopped at 9:20; we haven't had time to get it repaired. The brass pendulum is still, the chimes don't ring. One day you look out the window, green summer, the next, and the…

Why, Yes, My House is a Library Now

I was puttering around on Etsy the other day and came across something I absolutely had to have. Of course, this is one of the hazards of browsing Etsy but it is a hazard I willingly risk all too often. Etsy is a treasure trove of things you didn’t know existed but now desperately want. It also is full of a lot of junk but that is just the internet in general. Anyway, look what I bought and then tell me you aren’t tempted to immediately go looking for one for yourself. Yes, I am the very proud owner of a book embosser. There are lots and lots of different…

    A Poem for a Thursday #179

Traci Brimhall is an American poet who teaches creative writing at Kansas State University. She has published several poetry collections and her work has appeared in such publications as The New Yorker and New England Review. She “often merges the everyday with surreal imagery to meditate on themes of sacrifice and transformation.” I love you like ladybugs love windowsills, love you like sperm whales love squid. There's no depth I wouldn't follow you through. I love you like the pawns in chess love aristocratic horses. I'll throw myself in front of a bishop or a queen for you. Even a sentient castle. My love is crazy like that. I like…
