    A Poem for a Thursday #152

I like Robert Frost’s poetry because it is so evocative of the New England I grew up in. Autumn in Ohio has been a great disappointment so far but I am hoping this is just a bad year for fall foliage and not indicative of the typical autumns. It has been so warm that the leaves haven’t been changing much at all. For now, I’ll read Frost’s poem about October and picture the New England scenery. O hushed October morning mild, Thy leaves have ripened to the fall; Tomorrow's wind, if it be wild, Should waste them all. The crows above the forest call; Tomorrow they may form and go,…

Book Review//The Widow of Bath by Margot Bennett

I am a little behind on reviewing the British Library Crime Classics I have received but that is fine with me because it gives me the perfect excuse to sit and binge read a few in a row. I finished The Widow of Bath last weekend and greatly enjoyed it. The plot was more than a little implausible but the writing style was clever and witty and I can forgive a lot if the writing is good. Here is the blurb from the back of the book. Hugh Everton was intent on nothing more than quietly drinking in the second-rate hotel he found himself in on England’s south coast –…

    A Poem for a Thursday #151

Bob Hicok is an American poet and a professor of creative writing at Virginia Tech. Before becoming a teacher, he owned and ran an automotive die design business. Hicok’s poetry is “known for its accessible, meditative style. Narrative and associational, his poems are at once funny and wry, poignant and silly, smart and sad: they offer varied portraits of the lives of working people, of violence and pop culture, while containing moments of unexpected beauty and trenchant observations on human nature.” I don't have much time. I'm an important person to chickadees and mourning doves, whose feeder was smashed last night by a raccoon. Soon I'll be wielding duct tape,…

    Simple Pleasures

My phone tells me that this plant is Japanese Thimbleweed. I have discovered the joys of using Google Lens to identify every plant I don’t know. It makes walks with me interesting. I think they are interesting because I now know the names of lots of wildflowers. My husband finds them “interesting” because he continually has to stop and wait for me. I don’t know why I feel the need to identify all the plants since we live in an apartment and I don’t have a garden to plant them in, yet, here we are. Continuing the nature theme, we went to the zoo about a week ago. The animals…

    A Poem for a Thursday #150

Sophie Cabot Black is an American poet. She has won a number of prizes and has taught at Rutgers University and Columbia University. She divides her time between New York City and Connecticut. The Boston Review says of her writing, “Black’s taut, resonant lyrics are chastened of all unnecessary verbiage and reveal a poet of keen assurance and consummate craft, but perhaps what most amazes the reader is that such honed writing can speak with such emotional immediacy.” As the leaves turn their backs on us And the lilac give over to dusk, nothing Is ever certain, not even the house, stubborn In twilight as it outlasts the grove It…
