A Couple of Bookshops in Ohio

Most of us have not had much of an opportunity to visit bookshops over the last year. It is one of the lesser catastrophes that we have all been dealing with. I know of few stress relievers that work as well as a wander through a secondhand bookshop. My blood pressure lowers as soon as I walk through the door. My husband is well aware of this fact so when we were in Ohio last month and I was very stressed by our (at that time) unsuccessful house searches he suggested I look for nearby bookstores. I knew what I was doing when I married that man. I quickly found…

    A Poem for a Thursday #123

Dorianne Laux is an American poet who lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. When speaking of the qualities she admires in poetry she said “Craft is important, a skill to be learned, but it’s not the beginning and end of the story. I want the muddled middle to be filled with the gristle of living.” The cat calls for her dinner. On the porch I bend and pour brown soy stars into her bowl, stroke her dark fur. It's not quite night. Pinpricks of light in the eastern sky. Above my neighbor's roof, a transparent moon, a pink rag of cloud. Inside my house are those who love me. My daughter…

Chaos With a Side of Exhaustion

You know how chickens frantically run around kicking up dust, getting in each other’s way, and seemingly not accomplishing very much? That is what my life feels like right now. It is a lot of endless research, (moving companies) endless sorting and packing, (two truck loads to the dump, two car loads to the thrift store. Progress is being made.) and endless cleaning (house showings.) I know it is actually progress but it feels like I am just repeating the same actions every day. And every time I cross something off a list I add another item at the bottom. Today we had to be out of our house all…

    A Poem for a Thursday #122

This poem made me smile and that was enough to make it my choice for this week. It also made me think of my grandmother. She has definitely retained her spunky attitude as she has aged and I hope I can do the same. (Hi Grandma!) When you see me sitting quietly, Like a sack left on the shelf, Don't think I need your chattering. I'm listening to myself. Hold! Stop your sympathy! Understanding if you got it, Otherwise I'll do without it! When my bones are stiff and aching, And my feet won't climb the stair, I will only ask one favor: Don't bring me no rocking chair. When…

Book Review//O, The Brave Music by Dorothy Evelyn Smith

Ruan Ashley is a sharp, observant child coming of age before the first World War. She narrates O, The Brave Music and the nostalgic, yearning tone pulls the reader into her life. It is a life full of tragedy but somehow the tragedy does not dominate. Ruan is the child of two mismatched parents. They loved each other in the beginning but now are tearing each other apart. We see their lives through Ruan’s eyes and slowly, as she grows, gain a clearer understanding of the relationships she is surrounded by. Ruan is intelligent, imaginative, and a lover of books and words. Words. They have always been the very stuff…
