A Day Out//Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens
Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens is the former home of F. A. Seiberling and his family. Sieberling was the co-founder of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. F. A. Seiberling and his brother C. W. Sieberling turned Goodyear into the largest manufacturer of tires in the world and put Akron, Ohio on the map. The estate was built between 1912 and 1915. Seiberling and his wife, Gertrude, lived there with their family. Yes, I did just include two photos of the library. Would you expect any less of me? Besides, how could anyone possibly resist that bookcase that swings open to, I suppose, a secret room. There wasn’t anyone nearby…

A Poem for a Thursday #226
Over the last few years, I have discovered so many poets that sometimes I find myself discovering them all over again. I fall in love with a poem, feature it, and then move on. Eventually, I find myself loving another poem by the same writer and it is only when I double-check before posting that I realize I have featured that poet before. This is exactly what happened with Tom Hennen. You can read my previous post about him here. There are no creatures you cannot love. A frog calling at God From the moon-filled ditch As you stand on the country road in the June night. The sound is…

A Poem for a Thursday #225
Marge Piercy is an American activist and writer. She has written at least 17 volumes of poetry and 15 novels as well as a play, a book of non-fiction, and a memoir. Piercy’s work focuses on feminist and social issues. She and her husband, Ira Wood, run Leapfrog Press. The people I love the best jump into work head first without dallying in the shallows and swim off with sure strokes almost out of sight. They seem to become natives of that element, the black sleek heads of seals bouncing like half-submerged balls. I love people who harness themselves, an ox to a heavy cart, who pull like water buffalo,…

Golden Moments #17
I am feeling relatively cheerful today so it seems like a good day for a post full of positive things. I just returned from a tour of a friend’s gardens. She has terraces, paths, a greenhouse, a water feature, a patio, and a fire pit. There are more different flowers than you can ever imagine. It is amazing what she has done with a reasonably small suburban backyard. After the tour, we sat on the patio for several hours chatting about gardens, children, husbands, books and other such things. I’ve lived in Ohio for two years now and making new friends is difficult so this was very nice. I bought…

A Poem for a Thursday #224
One of these centuries, my life is going to calm down and I am going to have time to write regular posts again. In the meantime, these poetry posts keep the blog ticking along. My daughter is graduating from high school in a couple of weeks which is simply unbelievable. She should still be five years old and obsessively talking about dinosaurs. Well, the dinosaur part is true so at least I know she is still my little girl inside that grown-up exterior. This week’s poem is written by Sara Teasedale. Teasedale wrote 7 books of poetry in her lifetime and was very popular with the public and critics. Her…
