Knitting Lately

I haven’t had a lot of time lately for any of my hobbies, including this blog. However, I am not giving any of them up. I’ll simply continue to fit them into the corners of my life until I can, on some glorious, unlikely day in the future, live a life of leisure.

I have managed to finish two knitting projects. Both of them were started spontaneously on bad days when I didn’t want to figure out too many new skills. The scarf is lovely and cheerful. I knitted a fair amount of it while watching very boring online trainings at work. The bra top turned out better than I thought, though it is shorter than I would like. I’ll just wear it layered under something. As my daughter said when I showed it to her, it looks like an actual garment. That is how we gauge success around here.

I started another simple project last night. My son has been surprisingly impressed with my knitting attempts and he asked if I would knit a beanie for him. He picked out a beautiful green yarn. It is knitting up so nicely. I also have yarn for my first sweater and I am hoping to start that soon if my crazy life ever allows a bit of extra time to figure out something new. I picked a sweater pattern that also has a YouTube tutorial to get me through the difficult parts.

Tell me about your hobbies. How do you fit them in around the necessities of life? And how do you pick between doing your hobby and reading a book? I want to do it all!

I love the criteria for success. The scarf looks very complicated with the way the stripes go.

My hobbies are gardening, learning a language, and easy bushwalking. Every so often the urge to craft gets me. And the outcomes always proves that I cannot craft. I choose reading over sleep; that’s how I fit in my reading and hobbies (and unfortunately work).

I took up knitting again 10 years ago following a minor stroke. It helped rehabilitate my left atm and fingers. At the time I couldn’t read for more than 10 minutes at a time so took to listening to books. We are blessed in the UK with the BBC radio who produce wonderful comedies, classic serials and dramas. My knitting and reading have now vastly improved. I have learnt 2 things. ALWAYS do a tension square and if a book isn’t giving pleasure put it away. Life is too sure for disappointments.

That is very good life advice! So far, all my knitting projects have been relatively simple but I bought yarn for my first sweater so I will have to start doing tension squares. My heart tells me just wing it but my head knows that is not a good idea.
