Chaos With a Side of Exhaustion

You know how chickens frantically run around kicking up dust, getting in each other’s way, and seemingly not accomplishing very much? That is what my life feels like right now. It is a lot of endless research, (moving companies) endless sorting and packing, (two truck loads to the dump, two car loads to the thrift store. Progress is being made.) and endless cleaning (house showings.) I know it is actually progress but it feels like I am just repeating the same actions every day. And every time I cross something off a list I add another item at the bottom.

Today we had to be out of our house all day for the eleven scheduled house showings. What do you do in the middle of a pandemic when you don’t want to be around too many people? Thankfully, the weather was beautiful and we spent part of the day sitting six feet away from my parents’ back deck and chatting with them. We have not seen them much at all for the last year so that was nice. I managed to convince my dad that it would be perfectly reasonable for me to store a few small things in his basement for an indefinite amount of time. This was a huge concession on his part since he spends a lot of his time trying to convince me that I want items he is trying to get rid of. I think it is only fair I make use of his basement after all the things they have managed to palm off on me and my children over the years!

My reading has slowed down a bit over the last weeks since I have devoted so much time to necessary research. However, I had a pile of nonfiction books I was going to write a post about. Last week one of my bookshelves broke when we were trying to move it to clear the way to remove a couch. I decided to just pack all those books from the bookshelf in boxes ready to move. Well, the stack of books I was going to tell you about is now distributed throughout five boxes of books. I guess that post will have to wait.

Later…

I got this far in writing this post last night and exhaustion took over and I realized I could not string together a coherent sentence. Logically, I should have immediately gone to bed and gotten some rest. I was not logical. Instead, I sat on the couch and read my book until 11:15. Then I got up this morning and started another round of cleaning my house for a 9:00 showing and then briefly coming home to touch it up between showings that were scattered throughout the day. We all finished work/school/errands/walks just in time for the evening round of showings. Some friends of ours have a beautiful backyard complete with a pond and kayaks and they kindly said we could spend a couple of hours there until the showings finished. It was lovely and relaxing.

Our house showings are done now. We have nine offers with more coming in. This is a crazy market. And, just in case you are thinking we are selling some amazing house everyone is desperate to live in, we are not. It is an average, perfectly acceptable but not fancy, house in an average small town. We have done a lot of work on it but it needs a lot more. There are so few houses on the market that any one that is listed starts a bidding war. Tomorrow we have to decide which offer to accept.

Have any of you seen the Jane Austen bag that Yoshi has introduced? You can see it here. I want it so badly. I have loved their bookworm bags for a long time and I have always told myself that if they ever make a Jane Austen one I am going to buy it. Well, they made one but for various reasons I haven’t felt like I should spend the money. However, if people are going to fight over our house and throw money our way I am thinking maybe I can treat myself. If I am going to survive this move I need a prize at the end and this might just be it! I’ll feel guilty because I always feel guilty when I spend money on myself but I don’t think I care. Apparently, chaos and exhaustion make me willing to spend money. There are a few books I want too…

Even Later…

.

I managed to finish writing this yesterday but then life got ridiculous again and I forgot to publish it. I also forgot to eat until 3:30 today (except for one tiny snack) so I seem to be doing really well at keeping on top of things. But in good news, we accepted an offer on our house today. It took 90 minutes to wade through the 13 offers we received but we did it. Hurray, right? Or, if you are us, you can move straight on to worrying about things like appraisals and inspections. Because there is no good situation we are unable to make stressful by worrying about things that haven’t happened yet and probably will never happen.

I hope your move goes smoothly. As a former New Englander, I’ll miss your New England posts, but it’ll be fun to explore your new town / area with you. The last sentence in your post is the way I live my life, too! Best of luck!

Moving is extremely stressful, between the never ending list of things to do, deciscions to make and all the feelings. Moving from one state to another and selling a house was the one time in my life when I caught the flu. Also accidentlly set my sweatshirt on fire with being too close to the stove and trying to multitask while cooking, and fell down a set of icy stairs. I was fine! But learn from my bad example. Slow down and take care of yourself. You deserve a Jane Austn bag when all this is over. Best wishes.

Oh my! That is a lot to have happen to you all at once. I did slow down today. I sat on the couch and read two books. It was glorious. Tomorrow reality and my endless list of things to do returns but today is nice and relaxing.

That is such good news that you don’t have to worry about getting your house sold – or not. You’re over the worst of the stress I reckon, we got a great removal company and they made that part all so easy for us. I really hope that this is going to be a good move for you all. You definitely deserve that bag – but I know how you feel, ‘mum’ is always at the back of the queue.

Yes, all the immediate interest in the house does take a lot of the pressure off. This week’s job is to figure out the moving company. I think it will be a good move–a lot to adapt to but we have thought long and hard about it. I think I deserve the bag too but that does not mean I will manage to talk myself into buying it!
