Reasons Why Winter Is Not That Bad

You are overwhelmed by my enthusiasm and positive attitude, aren’t you? I don’t blame you. However, on yet another grey and gloomy day I give you a list of things to enjoy about winter. Tree branches outlined against the sky. Or, in this case, against the clouds. Either way, aren’t they pretty? The satisfying crunch when you step on a patch of crackly ice on your way to the car. Plus, the few extra minutes you spend crunching all the other icy patches in your driveway. Just me? Afghans. Blankets. Cosy spots on the couch. Being able to drink tea without feeling like you are going to melt into a…

    Books In Common

I worked with someone new last week and we were doing the usual get-acquainted chat. The “how old are your kids?” and “where do you live?” type thing. Somehow we ended up talking about what we like to do in our spare time. She said she likes to read.  Of course I asked what type of books she enjoys. She looked at me with a slightly uncertain expression and said: “You have probably never heard of her but I really like Georgette Heyer.” Yes, I know. That was my reaction too. What is it about finding you have a similar taste in books that immediately creates a bond with someone? Is…

    January Goals

It is January. It is raining. The alarm went off at 5:15 this morning. My kids are back in school and my husband is back at work.  I am home today since I am always home on Tuesdays.  I should be catching up on housework and laundry and grocery shopping.  If you saw the state of my house you would agree.  Having everyone home for a week is not conducive to tidiness and organization. Instead, I am sitting on the couch watching random Youtube videos, rereading Georgette Heyer mysteries, and writing a last-minute blog post. So yes, 2017 is off to a fantastic start. Though it is possible that the…

    A Bit of a Ramble

We did go on a bit of a ramble when this photo was taken.  Autumn is winding down now; the leaves are falling and the colors are fading. It is still beautiful.  The brightest colors have fallen and we are left with the gorgeous ambers and burnt oranges of the oaks contrasting with the green of the pines and the brown branches of the bare trees outlined against the sky. It might be my favorite part of fall, but really, I say that about every part of fall.  This is my season.  Soon we will have to bundle up and walk briskly in order to stay warm on our walks.…

A Few Burning Questions About Life

If I plan meals for the week and make a grocery list why do I then always leave the list on the coffee table when I go to the grocery store? Why is the child who can’t hear you ask for the five hundredth time for chores to be done perfectly able to hear you whisper the question “Should we order pizza?” from three rooms away? Why do my children need to talk to me as soon as I make a phone call?  They are never so eager for conversation at other times. Why did no one tell me that it was possible for a night owl to give birth…
