January Blues
It is January. For me, that means it is cold, dark, and snowy. The world is falling apart. Life feels a bit as if I am trudging towards a finish line that keeps moving further away. Everything is expensive (health insurance in the US anyone?) and everyone is sick with colds and flus. So, what can you do to find a little joy in a blue January? I’ve compiled a list of things that could, theoretically, make your days more endurable. And, if you live in a part of the world where it is hot and sunny feel free to use these same suggestions to escape from that relentless humidity.…

This and That
My daughter has decided she wants to plant a garden. I blame Earth Day. Her science class is requiring her to do some Earth Day activities and she thinks gardening will be fun. I agree, in theory, gardening is fun. You plant seeds, watch them grow, and harvest delicious tomatoes, peppers, and way too much zucchini. In actuality, you plant seeds, watch a few of them come up, battle the weeds, fight the rabbits, and melt in the 95-degree heat as your plants wither around you. Can you tell I am not a gardener? After a lot of painful effort, I have a couple of fairly decent flowerbeds in my…

Itchy Feet and Unlikely Dreams
I have recently been researching the feasibility of moving to Canada. Or Iceland. Or anywhere with a long and frigid winter. I think I have mentioned before that I am not a summer person. It has been very summery around here and I am not happy about it. Over the weekend, it was almost 100 degrees Fahrenheit and the heat index was much higher. I don’t know what that is in Celsius but let’s just say that you needed gills to breathe and I probably could have cooked an egg on the sidewalk if I had been so inclined. I was not so inclined because that would have involved leaving…

Random Thoughts From My Life Lately
I sat down to write a book review but I am tired and that is just not going to happen tonight so instead, you get all the random thoughts that have been running through my head as I sit with my fingers poised over the keyboard. Really, it is just a list of things to tell you, none of which in any way are particularly interesting or merit a blog post but I am telling you anyway. I started running. Again. But this time it seems to be sticking. I just finished week six of a couch-to-5k program and I can now run for 22 minutes straight. I have always…

Summer Plans
I want to sit with my feet buried in the sand, the sound of the waves in my ears, and a book in my hands that I barely glance at because I am so busy enjoying the moment. I want to look for sea glass and shells and oddly shaped rocks. I want to eat ice cream and fried shrimp and clam chowder. I want to walk down the beach in the evening as the sand cools and the waves lap around our feet. I want to shiver and protest as I slowly creep my way into the cold New England ocean but I’ll do it anyway because that is…
