Reasons Why Winter Is Not That Bad
You are overwhelmed by my enthusiasm and positive attitude, aren’t you? I don’t blame you. However, on yet another grey and gloomy day I give you a list of things to enjoy about winter.
Tree branches outlined against the sky. Or, in this case, against the clouds. Either way, aren’t they pretty?
The satisfying crunch when you step on a patch of crackly ice on your way to the car. Plus, the few extra minutes you spend crunching all the other icy patches in your driveway. Just me?
Afghans. Blankets. Cosy spots on the couch.
Being able to drink tea without feeling like you are going to melt into a puddle.
The wonderful muffled silence of a snowy day.
The joy of a child who wakes up to find out school has been canceled.
My joy when I wake up and find out the roads are too bad to drive anywhere.
Snowmen.
Sledding.
Soup.
Hot chocolate. Preferably overflowing with marshmallows and drunk after coming in from a vigorous snowball fight.
Fires in the fireplace.
Layers. Lots of layers. No one can tell where the layers end and you begin.
The cold, the dark, and the snowy roads provide the perfect excuse for refusing invitations. Yes, I can be slightly anti-social.
Spending an entire afternoon in the kitchen baking bread and cookies. Enjoying the warm blast of air every time you open the oven.
Marveling at the intricate beauty of the snowflakes that land on your coat sleeve.
Long winter evenings spent playing board games as a family.
Long winter evenings reading all the books. Yes, all of them. One right after another.
Hearty winter food like chili and shepherd’s pie.

yeah, winter's not that bad! I like it when it's sunny and a strong wind called bura here:) that's the best winter weather for me:)

My love of snow and cold weather makes winter bearable for me — I should write a post like this in the summer, which is my least-favorite season!

Well, I don't like summer at all. I just am not crazy about grey, gloomy days either. Basically, I want to live in a world where it is always 70 degrees with low humidity and lots of sunshine. That's not asking too much, is it?

Oh, I would love to have your enthusiasm for this season – and I might if it was a reasonable length. Here in northern Nova Scotia, spring won't begin in earnest until the beginning of May.
What makes it bearable is hoping & praying that there is only one more after this one, and then we will call the Ecuadorean Andes our home.

Well, I am not sure I actually have an enthusiasm for winter but if I look hard enough there are things I enjoy about it. And it is better than sweating miserably through 95 degree heat.
I have always wanted to visit Nova Scotia. A move to the Ecuadorean Andes sounds very exciting!

Our summer in Scotland rarely reaches 70 F and it's very humid with it, especially in recent years. I agree with all of your winter likes, especially the cracking ice and trees. Luckily although it has been freezing for ages we've also had a lot of blue sky days.

A summer that rarely reaches 70 degrees might be the summer for me. I hate the extreme heat. The cold isn't bad, especially if the days are sunny enough.

That's a great list. I don't think I have much to add to it. I do like cooler weather and always feel more alive, more motivated when it's cool. But not frigid! It does help to try to find the positive in uncomfortable situations. I'd like to live in your ideal world, except that I love cloudy, grey days more than I love sunshine.

I agree with feeling more alive in the cool weather. The heat of summer just takes all the energy right out of me. I do love bright sunshine on a cold day though.

Winter as you describe it is wonderful, but this year's problem is it's been cold enough but hardly any snow, and we're running out of time. In your earlier comment (70 degrees, low humidity, and sun), you are describing San Diego. I wonder if perfection might not get boring after a while?

Hmmm, and yet I have no strong desire to live in San Diego. Maybe I do need a bit of variety.

I love winter!! I know, I live in Hawaii…. but I lived in New York most of my life. Before moving back to Hawaii, Nick and I lived in Connecticut for about 6 months, most of those were winter. Nick says it was the happiest he has ever been in his life. We had the best time and we loved being cozy at home.

I love New York. We frequently go on vacation to an old farmhouse in rural New York. It is gorgeous and peaceful and we have a lot of happy memories there.
