A Few Facts About Life in the U.S.

The internet is a weird and wonderful place and occasionally I find myself irrationally irritated by opinions I encounter while scrolling through. Ridiculous, I know. My current source of irritation is the long list of ill-informed opinions about what life is like for the average American. Now, I am not here to address any of the big politically driven issues that are in the news these days. I am here to discuss such things as electric kettles and cheese. The New York Times recently published an article reviewing electric kettles and the internet took that to mean that Americans had never heard of them before. (The New York Times also…

    In Which We Try Again

If you have been reading my blog for a while you might remember that a few months ago the kids spent the weekend at my parent’s.  It was our anniversary and some time to ourselves sounded nice.  You also might remember that as we were leaving to drop off the kids my husband fell down the stairs and badly sprained both his ankles which, needless to say, put a bit of a damper on the weekend.  My parents thought that we deserved another attempt at a romantic weekend and we made plans for the kids to go there this past weekend. Things I Don’t Understand

I must admit this is just a random compilation of things that have been confusing me lately.  Or in some cases, just things that have been driving me nuts.  So here we go, a few things that make no sense to me. Cake mixes and canned frosting make no sense to me.  Now I like to bake, but I understand that isn’t true of everyone.  However, making a cake is not complicated.  The chocolate cake recipe I use simply requires you to dump everything in a bowl and mix it for two minutes.  There are no unusual ingredients and no complicated directions.  Why would you use a box mix if…

    Kids, Parents, and Other Nonsense

So, this is about being a parent and being around other parents and raising kids.  If that isn’t your thing, you can click away now.  If you enjoy listening to rants feel free to stick around, I’m glad to have you. Our kids go to public school, I don’t homeschool. We see nothing wrong with requiring our kids to do chores. We never let the kids sleep in our bed, even when they were tiny. We are very strict about what video games our kids play. My general belief is that a little junk food isn’t going to kill my kids. We are a bit old-fashioned and require the kids…

A Few Burning Questions About Life

If I plan meals for the week and make a grocery list why do I then always leave the list on the coffee table when I go to the grocery store? Why is the child who can’t hear you ask for the five hundredth time for chores to be done perfectly able to hear you whisper the question “Should we order pizza?” from three rooms away? Why do my children need to talk to me as soon as I make a phone call?  They are never so eager for conversation at other times. Why did no one tell me that it was possible for a night owl to give birth…
