Vintage Nancy Drew

One of the benefits of working at the library is that I am able to see the donations for the Friends of the Library book sale as soon as they come in. Most of the time, the books are nothing special; lots and lots of James Patterson and Danielle Steele with some inspirational fiction thrown in. However, every now and then I hit the jackpot and that was the case a few months ago. My co-workers have figured out that I like old books so when this box of vintage Nancy Drew mysteries was donated on a day I wasn’t working I was immediately messaged to see if I wanted them. Of course I did. I mean, just look at them. Those covers are amazing.
My best friend and I spent years buying Nancy Drew books and trading them back and forth. We loved the mysteries and the strange world she lived in where there was adventure around every corner. She drove a convertible! And was always beautifully dressed! And knew how to handle any and all difficult situations! It was an unrealistic world and we knew that as children but it was an irresistible world. We gulped down the books and read them over and over.
I haven’t read Nancy Drew in years. I am not sure she holds up as well as some of my other childhood favorites. But I think I might give her a try again for old time’s sake. She brought me a lot of happiness in the past and, if nothing else, these covers bring me a lot of happiness now. So, I will be curled up with a cup of tea and The Mystery of the Brass Bound Trunk. I have absolute confidence in Nancy’s ability to get to the root of the problem and to do it with style.

i am so jealous, jennifer! what a treasure! i’ve dreampt of finding something like that! i’ve collected all of the original books (they were updated in the 1960s) in various covers (or no covers) and re-read at least one of them every year. i enjoy that they are of their era, if not always pc. i hope you enjoy them!

I was so pleased with these. They are gorgeous and I am sure I will have fun rereading them.

Zowie! Those are amazing! How great that your friend knew you’d want them and alerted you. I haven’t read Nancy Drew in years, but I do find that the old, original stories hold up a bit better than the “modernized and updated” versions they released in the ’80s/’90s.

My coworkers know to save any old books for me to look at! I agree that the original stories hold up better. I want original Nancy not up-to-date Nancy!
