    The End Of Summer

    I hate to break it to you but summer is over.  I know this because my son went back to school yesterday and my daughter goes back tomorrow.  We all know that it is the school calendar that dictates the start and end of summer and the school calendar declares summer over. We will ignore the fact that yesterday it was almost 90 degrees.  Today it is about 70.  I was able to bake banana chocolate chip muffins without heating the house up to an ungodly temperature.  My gardens are getting that blowsy, overdone look and the nights are cooling down.     Snow Day

    It is snowing.  The world has the hushed silence of heavy snow with the occasional muffled scraping sound of snow plows on the road in front of the house.  School has been cancelled.  The kids went back to sleep. The cat is sleeping on the back of the couch.   We are home for the day.  It will probably be a day of too much screen time, too many books, (is there such a thing?) and too much baking.   Quite frankly, it sounds blissful.  The wonderful thing about snow days is they create enforced idleness.  There is so much you can’t do, so many places you can’t go, and…

    Words That Sing

    When I was in high school I had an English teacher who every day would put a poem up on the board.  She never discussed it or even mentioned it, but every day when we walked into class there would be something new.  I wasn’t much of a poetry reader but I was a reader, an obsessive reader, and if she put a piece of writing on the board I was going to read it.  Most of it didn’t make much of an impression.  I read it, thought it sounded nice, and moved on.  But one day she put an Edna St. Vincent Millay poem up and it was different.…
