Bookshop Visit//Cupboard Maker Books

Last weekend my kids and I were planning on going back to Connecticut to visit family and attend the Eastern States Exposition (the Big E) which is the largest fair on the east coast. We haven’t been to the Big E in years and were very excited about our trip. Then a nor’easter started brewing off the coast. After a week of watching the weather reports we finally canceled our trip. It ended up being the right decision but we were very disappointed. What do I do when I am grumpy about something? Buy book or go to the thrift store. I did both those things on Saturday when I was supposed to be at the fair. This post is about the bookstore I visited. I am slowly working my way through the bookstores in the area and this one is definitely worth a visit.

I have been following the bookstore’s account on Instagram for a while so I knew they have lots of older books which is always what I am looking for. They also have six resident cats and work with a charity to help other cats get adopted. The cats wander through the store and are very friendly.

Cupboard Maker Books is jammed full of all different kinds of books. It felt a bit overwhelming at first so I simply wandered in circles trying to figure out their shelving system. It is definitely a treasure hunt style bookshop but I do enjoy a good treasure hunt.

It was absolutely pouring down rain while I was in the store. There are few things as soothing to the soul as browsing through old books with rain drumming down on the roof and cats wandering past you. I spent a happy hour or so narrowing down my choices. When I moved a few months ago I announced that I really needed to buy fewer books and, while I would be visiting the bookstores in the area, I would be limiting myself to one book purchased at each location. I think we all know how that has been going. You can see the three books I purchased in the photo below.

Cupboard Maker Books definitely brightened my day even though the skies were grey and rainy. I will be going back to browse the books, pet the cats, and ignore the vicissitudes of life.
