How to Improve a Rotten Week

We were supposed to be home in Connecticut visiting friends and family this week. Most of us haven’t been back in a year and a half and we were hugely looking forward to it. We were going to spend the first half of the week with family and then the end of the week we were going to stay with one of my closest friends. But then my son got sick so we had to cancel. Then my husband got sick. Then my daughter got sick. I am the last one standing and I am probably doomed. This is not a good week. So what do you (I) do when things get miserable?
Start by stomping around the house and sulking. I had to quit that because it was making my son feel guilty for being sick.
I then moved on to searching the internet for a treat to buy myself. A bag or some shoes are my go-to’s. After one evening of puttering, I decided I didn’t need anything and it was silly to spend money when I didn’t have to so I went to Goodwill which is my fallback therapy place. I bought a floral 90s dress and a black wide-legged jumpsuit for $13.00.
Baking is also good therapy so I made my husband a pumpkin pie and I made cinnamon scones for myself. I love these scones. I’m linking the recipe because I think you should all make them.
Then I started watching the latest season (I think?) of The Great British Bake Off. There is nothing like watching a bunch of nice people frantically try to bake increasingly complex cakes to take your mind off your own sorrows.
I also spent several evenings curled up in my chair reading entire books. I am not sure that belongs in this post because that is just normal life for me but it does always improve my mood so we are including it.
I have the whole day off today and none of my family is up to doing much yet so I thought maybe I would take myself on an outing. A bookstore? Another Goodwill trip? A solitary lunch date? We shall see.
It’s not Connecticut but it will have to do.

I ended up going to Target and buying everyone little gifts to cheer them up. Nothing fancy; just chocolate and card packs and sketchbooks. And tiny Lego sets for my two grown-up children! They immediately reverted to childhood and were completely thrilled which is what you need when you are sick.
