Golden Moments #17

I am feeling relatively cheerful today so it seems like a good day for a post full of positive things. I just returned from a tour of a friend’s gardens. She has terraces, paths, a greenhouse, a water feature, a patio, and a fire pit. There are more different flowers than you can ever imagine. It is amazing what she has done with a reasonably small suburban backyard.

After the tour, we sat on the patio for several hours chatting about gardens, children, husbands, books and other such things. I’ve lived in Ohio for two years now and making new friends is difficult so this was very nice.

I bought a new Kindle. My old one was a Kindle Keyboard that I bought at least a dozen years ago. It has served me well but it will no longer hold a charge so it was time for a new one. I bought the basic model but I am very happy with it. It is so small and light. Plus, it has a backlit screen which makes reading in bed an absolute pleasure. Also, I can put library books on it. I love physical books but I love a Kindle for travel and it is very handy to stick in my bag when I am out and about.

Speaking of the library, I found out last night at work that I can get a library e-card for any library in the state of Ohio. ANY LIBRARY IN THE STATE OF OHIO! I spent the last 15 minutes before we closed signing up for cards at the Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cuyahoga County libraries. Giddy excitement would be the appropriate expression.

My husband and I went on a day trip to tour a mansion and some gardens. It was very nice but I am saving the rest of that golden moment for another post.

My son texted me at work the other day to ask me to bring some books home for him. That was nice enough but then he decided to come visit me and pick up the books himself. My daughter visits every day I’m working on her way home from school but my son doesn’t come in as often so it brightened my whole day to look up and see him standing in front of the desk.

My husband woke up the other day to an email restoring an airline credit for a canceled trip. We thought the credit was gone forever despite endless arguments with the airline so this was very exciting. We decided to use it immediately before they decided they made a mistake in returning it to us. After a few frantic days of discussion and research, we used the credit and our credit card points to book a vacation in Germany for the fall. I am so, so excited. We met in Germany almost 34 years ago and we always said we would go back for our 30th anniversary. Well, that was during Covid so obviously it didn’t happen and recently it hasn’t seemed financially feasible. However, the airline credit made a world of difference and we are planning on having the time of our lives. We are flying into Frankfurt and staying in that general area. If anyone knows Germany and has suggestions for things we must do please, let me know.

I think that is enough excitement for one post. I’m going to go browse the libraries of Ohio for e-books to load on my Kindle.

That was a lovely post to read! I would be very excited to have access to other library cards, especially for ebook borrowing. And congratulations on your surprise trip! I am just starting to think about traveling again, but a sudden onset on home repairs has pushed that back a bit right now.

We stayed in Trier for a week — beautiful area with Roman ruins, Germany’s oldest Christian church, vineyards, and more. We then drove to Berlin, stopping at lovely places on the way, and spent 10 days there — that may be too much to add to your visit — but if you haven’t been for 30+ years, you might want to see the changes. Also lived in Hanover many many years ago and remember that area fondly.

I’ll look up Trier. We are staying in the general Frankfurt area so we will have to save Berlin for another trip. There are so many places I want to go and not enough time or money for them all!

Lovely post. So refreshing to hear something good about airlines. And brava to you for making friends in a new place!

I have no idea what made them return the flight credit. They took it away last fall. We weren’t going to argue about it; we just used it immediately!
