    Two Bookshop Visits

    May 28, 2024 /

Last week I wrote about our trip to Mohican State Park and I mentioned that it rained one of the days we were there which obviously made bookstore visits absolutely necessary. We started at Holly’s Book Rack in Ontario, OH. Frequently, I find that some of the secondhand bookshops I visit don’t stock older books. Since those are the books I am usually looking for that can lead to disappointment. Thankfully, Holly’s Book Rack had a good selection of classics and older books. I spent a long time browsing and finally bought the books in the photo above. When I was paying for them the owner looked through my selection…

    A Poem for a Thursday #263

Thomas Carew was one of the Cavalier poets of the 17th century. These were a school of poets who supported King Charles I during the English Civil War. King Charles was a supporter of the arts. Many of Carew’s works are sensuous love poems addressed to “Celia” who is supposed to be his lover. While popular during his day, Carew’s works went slowly out of favor until the 20th century when critics reexamined his role in literature. Now that the winter's gone, the earth hath lostHer snow-white robes, and now no more the frostCandies the grass, or casts an icy creamUpon the silver lake or crystal stream; But the warm sun…

    A Day Out//Mohican State Park

    May 22, 2024 /

Last month my husband and I went away for a few days to the Mohican State Park and the adjacent Mohican State Forest. The state park is 1,100 acres and the state forest is 4,525 acres. The park is about sixty miles away in a generally southern direction. The Clearfork Gorge, Mohican river, and hemlock forest provide plenty of scenic opportunities and lovely hikes. I have lived in Ohio for three years now and I am still not resigned to the fact that the state is relatively flat and lightly wooded. It is pretty and much more rolling than Illinois, where I have also lived, but the landscape is not…

Langston Hughes was an American poet, playwright, novelist, and social activist. He was a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. Hughes’ work provides “insightful portrayals of Black life in America from the 1920s to the 1960s.” In time of silver rainThe earth puts forth new life again,Green grasses growAnd flowers lift their heads,And over all the plain The wonder spreadsOf Life,Of Life,Of life!In time of silver rainThe butterflies lift silken wingsTo catch a rainbow cry,And trees put forth new leaves to singIn joy beneath the skyAs down the roadwayPassing boys and girlsGo singing, too,In time of silver rain When springAnd lifeAre new.In Time of Silver RainLangston Hughes

Book Review//Stories for Winter and Nights by the Fire

    May 15, 2024 /

Those of you who live in the same hemisphere as me might have some questions about this photo. After all, it isn’t winter and yet I am reading a wintery book and knitting mittens for my daughter. It is going to be 80 degrees F tomorrow. What is wrong with me? What is wrong is that I am way behind on a lot of things these days. I actually read this book back in January but I read it while recovering from gallbladder surgery. I should have reviewed it right away but I didn’t and apparently the pain meds made me groggy because I don’t remember much about it. I…
