At any given moment, I have a stack of books piled on and next to the couch, my bed, or any available flat surface. They are books I am currently reading, books I have finished, books I want to read. It snowed the other day so I pulled The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder off my shelf. Obviously. It is the book I think of when I think of a winter story. When I was a child I was fascinated by the idea of twisting hay into sticks to burn in the stove, by snowstorms so deep they had to tunnel their way to the barn, and by Cap Garland and Almanzo Wilder’s expedition to find wheat for the starving town.
