A Poem for a Thursday #335
I really enjoy the poetry of e.e. cummings. It sounds like such nonsense but the more you read it the less like nonsense it is. His use of language is so interesting.
may my heart always be open to little
birds who are the secrets of living
whatever they sing is better than to know
and if men should not hear them men are old
may my mind stroll about hungry
and fearless and thirsty and supple
and even if it's sunday may i be wrong
for whenever men are right they are not young
and may myself do nothing usefully
and love yourself so more than truly
there's never been quite such a fool who could fail
pulling all the sky over him with one smile
may my heart always be open
e. e. cummings

May my heart always be open – lovely <3
There are some e.e. cummings poems in the anthology I am currently reading (though I will be reading the Australian ones first for our national poetry month), but the mention of birds at the start made me smile sadly. Bird flu has finally found its way onto Australian shores, first with some mirgratory birds, but in the past few days the first native birds have been found dead with the virus.
I am so afraid of what will happen to our bushland and gardens without the wonder and joy of birdsong (and all the other things they do to keep the ecosystem in some kind of balance).

That is so sad. “The wonder and joy of birdsong” I like that.
