New Things

Of course a post about new things I have purchased will include a selection of books. Who do you think I am? If such a post is ever lacking books you can consider it a cry for help.

I read Lucy Mangan’s Bookworm a few years ago and absolutely loved it. As soon as I found out she had published a new reading memoir I knew I needed to buy it. Yes, “needed” is the operative word here. I am saving “Bookish” for just the right day. To be honest, that might be a mistake because I am not sure the right day is ever going to come but I live in hope. The other three books are ones I acquired over recent trips back home to CT. I might have mentioned the Blueberries for Sal Cookbook before but I don’t remember. I bought it when we went to Old Sturbridge Village as a family. It was supposed to be part of a thank-you gift for the person who was feeding our cat but I just couldn’t give it up. The other two books are from the South Windsor Public Library. They have a section where they put donated books that they don’t think will sell in their book sale. The books are free and I always find great things. I am pretty sure I own the Charlotte Armstrong books but the ones I have are paperback and not in great shape. The Salt Book is about life in old-time New England. It looks like it should be fun to dip in and out of when I am feeling nostalgic and homesick.

I also bought some jewelry from Etsy. The shop, bottledupdesigns, is one I have been looking at for a long time. The owner makes jewelry from old bottles found in the woods of Pennsylvania. I think that is so cool. The red glass is from 1940s beer bottles, the pink is depression glass, and the blue is an old Noxzema bottle from the 1960s. Her prices are very reasonable to begin with and I bought these during a 50% off sale that was running. I think she increased her prices around the first of the year but they are still very affordable. I am thrilled with these. I told my husband he should be grateful that the jewelry I want is made out of old glass and not precious gems!

It has been miserably cold lately. Today’s high was 12 degrees F (-11 C). We got 16 inches of snow the other day. It isn’t supposed to warm up much for the foreseeable future. At least I have books and pretty things.

A blog by a book lover, tea drinker, and over-analyzer of life.
