Book Sale Bargains

Every now and then there is a book sale at the library where I work. It is run by the Friends of the Library and stocked with donations from patrons. It has been a while since there has been a sale though the Book Nook has been open whenever a volunteer is there. I was happy to see that a recent Saturday I was working was a sale day. We were understaffed that day and all I managed to do was run in for literally five minutes and grab what I could. I think I did pretty well especially when you consider that you could fill a bag for three dollars. I bought 13 books for three dollars which comes out to 23 cents a book. They were practically giving them away.

Since I only had five minutes I confined my search to a few specific areas; crafting, classics, poetry, and history. I was super happy with all these knitting books. They are mostly beyond my capabilities right now but I am making slow but steady progress so one of these days I will be able to pick a pattern from these books. In the meantime, they are fun to flip through.

The crochet books pictured above where purchased with my daughter in mind. She has expressed some interest in learning how to crochet, specifically amigurumi, so I thought she would like them. I bought the sewing book because one of these years I would like to get my machine out and learn how to sew properly. I have done a little here and there over the years but my skills are very rusty. This will have to wait until we eventually move since I just don’t have room where we live currently.

I am working on expanding my collection of poetry books since I always need new poems for my “Poem for a Thursday” posts. I recently featured a poem by Rilke that I greatly liked so I was happy to find a volume of his poems.

I recently read the Peter Ackroyd book but I can picture myself rereading it one of these days. It was a lot of information to take in and I have already forgotten a lot. The Churchill book was an obvious choice since it slots in perfectly with my interest in WWII.

Did I need another copy of Mansfield Park? Absolutely not. However, I visited at the end of the sale and no one had purchased it which just seemed wrong. So I bought it. Obviously. What else could I do? I’ve never read Crime and Punishment and I am trying to broaden my horizons just a little bit. I’ll give it a try.

There you go; 13 books for three dollars. I wonder what treasures I would have found if I had been able to visit at the start of the sale or had been able to spend more time searching. Still, I can’t complain. Would you have bought any of these?
