A Few Days in New York
Last week my husband and I took a quick trip to western New York. I had a few days off work and a little getaway sounded nice so we threw things in a suitcase and took off. It was largely a lovely few days if you ignore the fact that my husband ended up not feeling that well for one of the days. We almost went home but he woke up the next morning feeling better so we continued on our way.
We have spent a good amount of time in New York over the years but most of that has been in the eastern part of the state. Since we are currently living in Ohio we are now exploring the western part of the state. East or west, I do love New York. We stopped on our way towards Buffalo to visit a lighthouse on Lake Erie. I do also love a good lighthouse.
We visited Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion on one beautiful afternoon. This Victorian summer home was given to the state by Frederick Ferris and Mary Clark Thompson. It contains lovely period architecture and themed gardens including a Japanese tea garden.
We spent a lot of time simply meandering our way from town to town through the beautiful countryside. I love the hills and trees. We did stop in a few of the small towns. Honeoye Falls is pictured in the photo at the top of this post and below. I did stop in the bookstore there but didn’t buy anything. The prices were high and I didn’t see anything I was desperate to buy.
We finished up our few days away but heading into downtown Buffalo for a very brief visit. We wanted to see if it was a city we would be interested in returning to and we decided that yes, it was. We walked for a bit along Canalside which is a waterfront area located at the former terminus of the Erie Canal.
All in all, despite my husband not feeling his best and the trip being a bit rushed, we had a very nice time and we are already planning what we would like to do on another few days away. It is fun to explore a new area.

That sounds like a lovely trip! I’ve been thinking about a short trip myself, because I’m short of time off from work right now! There is still a lot I haven’t seen in Texas, but I’d also like to see new places.

We live in northern England & have seen quite a few lovely old houses both here (Derbyshire has several, of which – honestly! – Chatsworth is the least interesting) and in southern England; however, although I’ve twice visited the U.S. – California and Connecticut) I’ve never visited any old houses there so this was a treat.

When we visit the U.K. I greatly enjoy visiting all the old houses. There are some in the U.S. though obviously not as old! I am glad you visited CT since that is where I am from!

Quick trips are such great mini-adventures and your pictures are just beautiful! I kick myself now for not having explored New York or any bit of the US Northeast when I was at university in Ontario but, with little money, no car, and limited time, it never even occured to me then. And now it’s all so far away!
