A Perfect Day

Last week my kids and I had a perfect day.

I know that is a bold statement but it is true. We were home visiting family and friends and we had a day to ourselves. We wanted to do something familiar and comforting after a stressful few days so we went to Old Sturbridge Village. I have written about OSV many times here. You can do a search if you would like to read more about it. It is a living history museum that I have been visiting my entire life and that I then brought my kids to from the time they were tiny.

We always enjoy our visits to the Village but this visit was perfect. The weather was gorgeous, the buildings were staffed by interpreters doing interesting things, and everything was, well, perfect.

I am not really sure what turns a nice day into a perfect day. We didn’t do anything we haven’t done a hundred times before. The thing about a perfect day is that it creeps up on you. You go through your day thinking it is just an ordinary fun day and then at some point you realize; this day is perfect. You wouldn’t change a thing about it.

For a little while, my kids and I forgot our worries about an ill family member and the stresses of everyday life. We simply enjoyed being together and the nostalgia of being back at a place we have loved all our lives. We wandered the dirt roads, admired the calves and lambs, and learned about cheesemaking. I took almost no photos which is unusual for me. Instead, I simply enjoyed being in the moment with my children. We chatted and were silent; we walked together and straggled down the road separately. We ambled in and out of buildings and leaned on fences.

We all kept saying the same thing: “This is a perfect day.”
