A Quiet Evening

I had to work yesterday afternoon and I hate working on Sundays. It complicates my life, means I have to miss a meeting I usually attend, and simply feels wrong. Needless to say, I tend to come home from working a Sunday feeling just a tad bit grumpy. I walked in the door to a dinner that needed to be cooked, a son who wanted to talk about something that was worrying him, and, I assumed, a husband who was feeling a bit neglected. I cooked dinner, talked to my son, and then my husband and daughter announced they had movie plans for the night.

I am pretty sure the heavens opened up and the angels sang.

I had a perfect excuse to retire to my bed with my computer, my stack of books, my knitting, and my embroidery and that is exactly what I did. I had full intentions of writing a blog post but I didn’t follow through. I knitted a bit, I read a lot of my book, and I watched a few tutorials about knitting I want to do. Everyone ignored me and I ignored everyone.

I am sure that if my husband was reading this he would say that if I need a quiet evening I should simply say so. He will understand. And I am sure that if I told my kids I was too tired to talk about whatever was stressing them they could wait a while. I am sure that is all true. However, as is true of many women, I tend to feel that it is my responsibility to take care of it all now. There is a constant stream of things that need to be done and conversations that need to be had. When the heavens align and the angels sing and I get some time to myself without feeling like I am carving it out from other things that must be done it feels glorious.

That being said, carve out the time, ignore the responsibilities, and take the time for yourself. The world will not fall apart if you don’t do that thing on your list right this minute. You will be a happier, nicer person if you aren’t stressed all the time.

Have a quiet evening every now and then. I’ll try to take my own advice if you will.
