Retreating From Reality
I have a bit of a revelation for you. Are you ready? The world is full of irritating people. It is even possible that some of the irritating people live with me. What’s that? I refuse to believe that I could possibly be equally irritating. Irritated or irritating; it is clear I have needed a bit of a break from reality lately. My ideal break from reality would involve a trip to London with lots of book shopping, tea-drinking, and cake-eating. That isn’t going to happen anytime soon (which might have something to do with the irritating-irritated issue) so I have had to figure out a new way to escape…

A Poem for a Thursday #146
I have a long list of poems by Billy Collins that I would like to feature but I try not to use a poet too often. However, today I stopped at this poem, read it three times, and decided it didn’t matter how many Billy Collins poems I have used. Today you are getting another one. I hope you enjoy it. Book Review//Tension by E. M. Delafield
Lady Rossiter is a character you love to hate. She is the wife of one of the directors of a technical college and she believes it is her mission in life to spread sweetness and light into the poor, benighted lives of those who have to work for their living. She is heavyhanded and interfering and possibly well-intentioned. She lives by the mantra of “Is it kind, is it wise, is it true?” Somehow, much of what she says is none of those things and yet she continues to be convinced she is doing her all for the people around her. I am tired, Julian. I shall go to the…

A Poem for a Thursday #145
I like Mary Oliver’s poetry because reading it feels like having a conversation with a friend. She says what we didn’t have the words to say. That is what any writer wants; to make the reader nod their head in agreement or understanding the whole time they are reading . This poem explains that desire clearly. I want to write something so simply about love or about pain that even as you are reading you feel it and as you read you keep feeling it and though it be my story it will be common, though it be singular it will be known to you so that by the end…

New Books
Believe it or not, and despite the books you will see in this post, I have been cutting back on my book purchases. I know, who even am I? For a long time, I lived in an area that didn’t have a great library system so if I wanted to read a book I had to track down a secondhand copy online. Now, I have access to the entire CLEVENET library system which is made up of 40 library systems in northeast Ohio. They don’t have everything I want but they do have a lot of things. I just checked and I have 20 requests pending and 7 library books…
