A Poem for a Thursday #136

I miss travel. I miss exploring new areas and escaping into a different life. I miss the feeling of possibility. I want to walk into a train station again and experience that heady emotion of adventure before you. Whether you want to escape for a day, a week, or forever, trains will take you there. I shared another poem by Faith Shearin a few years ago. You can read it here.

Even now, I hear one and I long to leave
without a suitcase or a plan; I want to step
onto the platform and reach for
the porter's hand and buy a ticket
to some other life; I want to sit
in the big seats and watch fields
turn into rivers or cities. I want to eat
cake on the dining car's
unsteady tablecloths, to sleep
while whole seasons
slip by. I want to be a passenger
again: a person who hears the name
of a place and stands up, a person
who steps into the steam of arrival.

The Sound of a Train

We used to live about 50 yards from a railway line and after we moved we really missed the noise of them. Now we sometimes hear a train in the distance, and I love to hear them hooting a warning, whenever we see a train when we’re out driving we say TWAIN!! How daft are we? Mind you I haven’t been on a train for ages, apart from a steam train going up to the Highlands – now that was an adventure!
