A Poem for a Thursday #129
I grew up reading Lucy Maud Montgomery’s books and it has created a life-long desire to visit Prince Edward Island. Maybe one day I will make it there. I stumbled across this poem of hers and it sounds exactly like something Anne Shirley would have written. I can picture her gazing out across the shore and composing this and then Diana being her admiring audience as she reads it aloud with dramatic emphasis.
A pale enchanted moon is sinking low Behind the dunes that fringe the shadowy lea, And there is haunted starlight on the flow Of immemorial sea. I am alone and need no more pretend Laughter or smile to hide a hungry heart; I walk with solitude as with a friend Enfolded and apart. We tread an eerie road across the moor Where shadows weave upon their ghostly looms, And winds sing an old lyric that might lure Sad queens from ancient tombs. I am a sister to the loveliness Of cool far hill and long-remembered shore, Finding in it a sweet forgetfulness Of all that hurt before. The world of day, its bitterness and cark, No longer have the power to make me weep; I welcome this communion of the dark As toilers welcome sleep. Night Lucy Maud Montgomery

What a perfect introduction and photo to that poem. I too grew up loving the Anne books. When I was young, I used to send away for brochures on PEI. Now, though, I worry the reality would not live up to my imaginings.

One of my sisters travelled all the way from Australia to PEI (she also spent some time in Canada and the US) to satisfy her Anne fetish. She loved every minute on the island and was definitely NOT disappointed. Her partner was more bemused though 🙂

I’ve also always wanted to visit PEI and there was a cruise calling in there that I thought about ‘doing’ a few years ago, but then thought – it’s not going to be anything like it was back then, so decided to avoid what would almost certainly have been a disappointment.

I regularly look at vacation rentals on PEI. Maybe one day we will actually go.
