A Poem for a Thursday #224

One of these centuries, my life is going to calm down and I am going to have time to write regular posts again. In the meantime, these poetry posts keep the blog ticking along.

My daughter is graduating from high school in a couple of weeks which is simply unbelievable. She should still be five years old and obsessively talking about dinosaurs. Well, the dinosaur part is true so at least I know she is still my little girl inside that grown-up exterior.

This week’s poem is written by Sara Teasedale. Teasedale wrote 7 books of poetry in her lifetime and was very popular with the public and critics. Her “well-crafted, lyrical poetry centered on a woman’s changing perspectives on beauty, love, and death.”

No one worth possessing
Can be quite possessed:
Lay that on your heart,
My young angry dear;
This truth, this hard and precious stone,
Lay it on your hot cheek,
Let it hide your tear.
Hold it like a crystal
When you are alone
And gaze in the depths of the icy stone.
Long, look long and you will be blessed:
No one worth possessing
Can be quite possessed.
