Here We Are

If you could zoom out on the photo above you would see a trash bag of clothes, an empty bookshelf, more boxes than you could count, and the fact that the couch is actually in the middle of the living room and has two lawn chairs next to it. Despite the absolute chaos, I am calling this a win. We are in Ohio and so are all our possessions. It has been a fraught couple of weeks with a lot of stress and a bit of bickering. Our furniture was delayed in Pennsylvania for two days which left us in a hotel over the weekend. I am pretty sure I am never going to find my teapot/hair dryer/favorite mug again. But here we are.

We used UPack ReloCube moving containers. You pack up the containers and then the company picks them up and delivers them to your new address. It worked reasonably well and was much more affordable than full service movers. We hired moving guys at this end to unpack the cubes which was probably one of the smartest things I have done in recent memory. We had three cubes. Three guys unpacked them and carted everything up to the third floor (no elevator) in one hour and forty minutes. It was amazing. They were politely baffled by our extensive book collection. One of them asked me if I was a teacher and if I had my Master’s degree. I said no and he asked if I had read all the books. I said I had read about 90 percent of them. He said that was impressive and I would like to believe he meant it but it is possible he was just being polite. (My kids say he was just being polite.)

We left some furniture behind that was going to need to be replaced soon anyway so now I get the fun of looking for replacements. I am planning on a big, comfy reading chair to go next to the biggest bookshelf. I suggested taking over the dining room and turning it into my library but I am not sure my husband thinks that is the most practical solution.

In the next few days I need to find a new doctor for my husband, register my daughter at the local high school, (Her CT school is letting her finish out the year virtually though.) get a library card, and start looking for a new part-time job. Plus, unpack and unpack and unpack.

But here we are. Let the Ohio adventure begin.

We just made the decision to move, rather suddenly after much dithering, so I am inspired by your story of making it through. It feels overwhelming to contemplate, but I don’t want to wait until we’re too old to do it. Our offer on a condo has been accepted so now begins the downsizing of possessions, organizing, and cleaning in the house where we’ve been for the last 31 years. Got any “I wish I had known” advice? I too am planning on a comfy reading chair, next to the view of the creek.

We only lived in our house for 12 years and it was a hassle to clean out. I’ll be thinking of you! My only advice is to label your boxes thoroughly. I labeled them but I wish I had gone beyond a general label and put exactly what was in each one. It would have saved me searching for kitchen knives and such the day we arrived. A view of the creek sounds lovely!

We moved from a large house to a condo eleven years ago. It was a successful decision. My advice? Be as ruthless as you can manage in paring down your possessions. We were not as ruthless as we should have been and are still paring down. It is easier to do during a move than after.

I’m so glad that you’re move is over with – but not as glad as you are I bet! I hope you all settle in quickly and that you find a job soon.
