    New Books

Believe it or not, and despite the books you will see in this post, I have been cutting back on my book purchases. I know, who even am I? For a long time, I lived in an area that didn’t have a great library system so if I wanted to read a book I had to track down a secondhand copy online. Now, I have access to the entire CLEVENET library system which is made up of 40 library systems in northeast Ohio. They don’t have everything I want but they do have a lot of things. I just checked and I have 20 requests pending and 7 library books…

    New Additions To My Shelves

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a book lover in possession of multiple copies of Jane Austen’s novels will always want one more. It is also a truth universally acknowledged that my husband is the best husband in the world. When these two pieces of universal knowledge combine then I end up with an absolutely wonderful copy of Pride and Prejudice. It was our thirtieth wedding anniversary earlier in the month and we weren’t able to do much to celebrate (thanks worldwide pandemic) and we both said we were fine with no gifts. However, he decided I needed a small gift anyway and this showed up in the mail.…

    I Bought Too Many Books

I didn’t really because any of you reading this blog post know that there is no such thing as too many books. However, some people in my life think I bought too many books. I view that as a challenge. Can I top my number of books purchased next time I am in the U.K.? Something to aim for. I came across this quote in In Search of London by H. V. Morton. I liked the quote even though he went on to talk about how only men can be true book lovers. I think that is pure nonsense. This quote isn’t nonsense though. It is just lovely. The man…

    Book Purchases

My daughter has discovered a love for thrift shopping. She spent years rolling her eyes at my secondhand purchases and then suddenly decided thrift stores were full of cool, vintage things.  I am pretty sure a subreddit is responsible for her change of mind. There is absolutely no chance she suddenly realized her mom was right all along. Last Saturday she asked to go to Savers to look for vintage clothes. I was happy to oblige even though few things will make you feel as old as realizing that the “vintage” clothes your 14-year-old daughter is looking for are the very same clothes you wore in your teenage years. I…

    Books I Bought in Scotland

Most unusually, book shopping was not the focus of this trip. I was traveling with my daughter and, much as she loves reading, she did not want to spend all her time in book shops. She wanted to see castles and pandas and museums as well. I suppose that is reasonable. However, I did manage to pop into a few bookshops and I came home with ten new books. I didn’t put a lot of thought into my purchases. Since I didn’t have much time in bookshops I just bought things when they looked interesting. Or I bought things because the bookseller was nice. The book second from the bottom…
