Bookshop Visit//The Book Shelf
One of the first things I did when we decided to move to northeast Ohio was to look up the bookstores in the area. Imagine my pleasure when I found out there was a used bookstore a mile or two down the road from me. I did not wait very long to visit it. The Book Shelf is staffed by volunteers and the proceeds are used to support adult literacy in the county. When I walked in I was immediately greeted by one of the older ladies staffing the store that day. She was extremely friendly and gave me a tour of the little store and talked a bit about the literacy program they support. Project: LEARN of Medina County provides tutoring and literacy support to adults who need assistance with English, math, English as a Second Language, or GED preparation.
The ladies were so friendly I knew I couldn’t leave without buying something. Besides, who wouldn’t want to do a little to support adult literacy? And if I can do that by buying a book or two then I am all for it. The shop is stocked with donated books so you never know what you are going to find. While I was in there another little old lady came in to donate some books and they all had a comfortable conversation about a common friend, church, and the joys of a good coupon for Taco Bell. The ladies were taking a deep personal interest in my book browsing so I was very thankful when I found a couple of books I wanted.
The prices were extremely reasonable and they give you a card that they stamp every time you buy a book. After ten stamps you get a free book. Who isn’t going to love that? The ladies told me there are two more Project: LEARN bookshops in the county and I fully intend to visit both of them as soon as possible.

I am SO envious!! Used books – and such a lot of them, although I imagine most are not what you’d want to read. Still. With enough time to browse, I’m sure you’ll find some gems.
But it is annoying to want to investigate and have someone else tagging along – with the best of intentions, of course.

You are right, most are not things I want to read but I was pleased to find a few things and there were some good books that I already own so that was encouraging.

They even had a British Library Crime Classic but I already own it.

What a lovely idea for a book shop!!! Finding a gem like this always makes me feel so much more at home when I’ve moved somewhere new.

Yes, it makes me feel like buying books is a good idea. After all, I am supporting a worthy charity. Not that I don’t always feel like buying books is a good idea.
