It should be pretty clear now to any long-term reader of this blog that if I visit a new city, town, or country I am going to immediately search out the bookstores. After all, why visit a location if you don’t acquire a few new books in the process? My husband is very used to enforced bookstore stops so he was not at all surprised when, after our visit to the Jane Austen costume exhibit<\/a>, I announced that there was a bookshop within walking distance. And walk I did despite the fact that there was a heat index of 103 degrees Fahrenheit that day and I practically melted into a puddle by the time I arrived. I left my husband walking down by the Ohio River and it was not quite so warm by the water. There was a nice breeze and some shade and it all felt quite doable with books as a reward. However, once I left the river and the shade behind it was a completely different story. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I persevered though because I am nothing if not determined when bookstores are on the horizon. I was seriously overheated by the time I arrived. I felt sweaty, a bit shaky, and definitely not at my best. I was hoping the Ohio Book Store would be worth it. The Ohio Book Store is made up of five floors of books and magazines. They have been in business since 1940 and also offer bookbinding services. Five floors! Can you imagine? I was only able to imagine because as I walked in I was greeted in a very friendly manner and informed that the upper floors were closed because they were cleaning the carpets. The employees said they could take me up anyway if there was something I particularly needed to see but there wasn’t. I simply wanted to browse. I would have to make do with the main floor and the basement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I headed to the basement in the hopes it would be cooler since I was still feeling shaky and way too hot. It was, slightly, and I browsed through the vintage mysteries while trying to avoid attention and pull myself together a bit. I found a couple of Mignon Eberhart mysteries that I am pretty sure I have never read as well as a Charlotte Armstrong double volume. If you turn it over from top to bottom and back to front there is another novel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main floor is gloriously cluttered with a wide selection of books and magazines at a variety of price points. I enjoyed looking at everything, even the things I could never afford. I did find a very affordable Cornelia Otis Skinner book and that made me very happy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would highly recommend the Ohio Book Store as long as you don’t decide to walk to it on an unbelievably hot day when they are cleaning their carpets. I found a few books (see below) and the store was charming with friendly employees\/owners. I will have to go back next time I am in Cincinnati so I can explore the other three floors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
