{"id":388,"date":"2015-12-09T12:08:00","date_gmt":"2015-12-09T12:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.holdsuponhappiness.com\/index.php\/2015\/12\/09\/pick-yourself-up-dust-yourself-off\/"},"modified":"2020-10-28T17:15:26","modified_gmt":"2020-10-28T17:15:26","slug":"pick-yourself-up-dust-yourself-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.holdsuponhappiness.com\/index.php\/2015\/12\/09\/pick-yourself-up-dust-yourself-off\/","title":{"rendered":"Pick yourself up, dust yourself off&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-w6hMU_JaIpU\/VmengrrrCOI\/AAAAAAAACbQ\/0c7TvAFWrh8\/s1600\/photo-1416772472542-01fdd961f986.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.holdsuponhappiness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/photo-1416772472542-01fdd961f986-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>In my husband&#8217;s case, this was literally necessary.<\/p>\n<p>I mentioned last week that the kids were going to my parents for the weekend. \u00a0We were going to have the whole weekend to ourselves. \u00a0Just imagine, eat what we want, talk about what we want, do what we want, for a whole 48 hours. \u00a0This doesn&#8217;t happen very often so we had really built it up into a big thing in our heads.<\/p>\n<p>So, let&#8217;s set the scene. \u00a0The kids are all packed, I am upstairs almost dressed for our dinner out after we drop the kids off. \u00a0We are supposed to leave in five minutes. \u00a0My husband walks down the stairs to the family room to make sure my son has his computer. \u00a0Except he didn&#8217;t really walk down the stairs. \u00a0He fell down them instead and sprained both his ankles. \u00a0Badly sprained his ankles, they instantly swelled up to twice their normal size and started turning black and blue. \u00a0He is yelling, my daughter comes running upstairs screaming at me that there is something wrong with Dad and I am frantically trying to get my inside-out shirt back on so I can go down and figure out what is going on. Almost the first thing my husband said to me was &#8220;we just can&#8217;t win, can we?&#8221; \u00a0The poor guy.<\/p>\n<p>So, no dinner out, no trip to the book store, no hike. (Yes, those are our ideas of fun. We are not &#8220;going out&#8221; people.) \u00a0Just a husband who was unable to get off the couch for the entire weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Not quite the romantic weekend we had envisioned.<\/p>\n<p>Such is life.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t all bad though. \u00a0I dropped the kids off, picked up Chinese food and the makings for ice cream sundaes and we spent the weekend eating, watching movies, and having fires in the fireplace. \u00a0And my husband made a valiant effort to pretend he wasn&#8217;t in pain. \u00a0But he was. \u00a0He is slowly getting better though he has some pretty spectacular bruises.<\/p>\n<p>I did get a bit of reading done. \u00a0I read a mystery I got off the free book rack at the library. I can&#8217;t remember the title right now and it is already in the attic in the donate box. It was populated with thoroughly unlikable characters. \u00a0I mean what are the odds of every single main character cheating on their spouse? \u00a0Annoying. \u00a0Besides, there really wasn&#8217;t much mystery to it. \u00a0I started reading one of the books about WWII that I bought recently. \u00a0That I am finding very interesting. \u00a0I also read about half of some chick-lit type thing but then abandoned it because I just didn&#8217;t care if I ever saw it again. \u00a0I debated starting one of the unread Persephone books I have on the shelf but I couldn&#8217;t quite bring myself to do it. \u00a0Does anyone else hoard books they think they might really enjoy, waiting for just the right time to read them?<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t do the Classics Club spin but I did think that I would just check what the 19th book on my list was. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t feel motivated to make a separate list since mine is new and mostly unread. \u00a0Anyway, it is <i>Middlemarch<\/i>. \u00a0That is the book I have been feeling moved to start next anyway but I am a little unsure. \u00a0I read it at a much older friend&#8217;s suggestion when I was a very early teen and I struggled with it. \u00a0I am not sure why, I enjoyed other classics at the time, but <em>Middlemarch<\/em> just didn&#8217;t work for me. \u00a0I am hoping I was just too young for it and reading it now will be a different experience. \u00a0We will see how it goes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In my husband&#8217;s case, this was literally necessary.
