When we moved last month my lilac bushes were just starting to bloom and I was sad to miss them. Alice Persons wrote today&#8217;s lovely poem about the joy of lilacs. Persons is an American poet who lives in Maine. She started writing poetry in the early 1980s but then stopped while she was in law school. Her first volume of poetry was published in 2003. She also cofounded Moon Pie Press in 2003 and has run it on her own since 2006. It has published more than 40 volumes of poetry from a wide variety of poets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">A guaranteed miracle,\nit happens for two weeks each May,\nthis bounty of riches\nwhere McMansion, trailer,\nthe humblest driveway\nburst with color -- pale lavender,\npurple, darker plum--\nand glorious scent. \nThis morning a battered station wagon\ndrew up on my street\nand a very fat woman got out\nand started tearing branches\nfrom my neighbor's tall old lilac--\ngrabbing, snapping stems, heaving\narmloads of purple sprays\ninto her beater.\nA tangle of kids' arms and legs\nwrithed in the car.\nI almost opened the screen door\nto say something,\nbut couldn't begrudge her theft,\nor the impulse\nto steal such beauty.\nJust this once,\nthere is enough for everyone.\n\nStealing Lilacs\nAlice N.
