A volume of her collected short stories was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. She said of her writing &#8220;I could not help the fact that I had not gone to war, and I had not done the male things. I had lived a woman&#8217;s life and that is what I wrote about.&#8221; While she was most well-known for her short stories she also published several volumes of poetry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">I was going to write a poem\nI made a pie instead it took\nabout the same amount of time\nof course the pie was a final\ndraft a poem would have had some\ndistance to go days and weeks and\nmuch crumpled paper\n\nthe pie already had a talking\ntumbling audience among small\ntrucks and a fire engine on \nthe kitchen floor\n\neverybody will like this pie\nit wil have apples and cranberries\ndried apricots in it many friends\nwill say why in the world did you\nmake only one\n\nthis does not happen with poems\n\nbecause of unreportable\nsadnesses I decided to \nsettle this morning for a re-\nsponsive eatership I do not\nwant to wait a week a year a\ngeneration for the right \nconsumer to come along\n\nThe Poet's Occasional Alternative\nGrace Paley<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Grace Paley was an American short story writer, poet, and political activist.
