(A post I wrote about it is<a href=\"http:\/\/www.holdsuponhappiness.com\/2016\/08\/a-place-in-country.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> here<\/a>.)\u00a0 We love it. It is on 70 acres with fields, woods, a stream, and a pond. It is a week of quiet and nature and peaceful joy. We weren&#8217;t able to go this year but today&#8217;s poem reminds me of just how wonderful it is and of the early morning joy of a walk up by the pond. Maybe next year&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><i>At Great Pond<\/i><br \/>\n<i>the sun, rising,<\/i><br \/>\n<i>scrapes his orange breast<\/i><br \/>\n<i>on the thick pines,<\/i><br \/>\n<i>and down tumble<\/i><br \/>\n<i>a few orange feathers into<\/i><br \/>\n<i>the dark water.<\/i><br \/>\n<i>On the far shore<\/i><br \/>\n<i>a white bird is standing<\/i><br \/>\n<i>like a white candle &#8212;<\/i><br \/>\n<i>or a man, in the distance,<\/i><br \/>\n<i>in the clasp of some meditation &#8212;<\/i><br \/>\n<i>while\u00a0all around me the lilies<\/i><br \/>\n<i>are breaking open again<\/i><br \/>\n<i>from the\u00a0black cave\u00a0<\/i><br \/>\n<i>of the night.<\/i><br \/>\n<i>Later, I will consider<\/i><br \/>\n<i>what I have seen &#8212;<\/i><br \/>\n<i>what it could signify &#8212;<\/i><br \/>\n<i>what words of adoration I might<\/i><br \/>\n<i>make of it, and to do this<\/i><br \/>\n<i>I will go indoors to my desk &#8212;<\/i><br \/>\n<i>I will sit in my chair &#8212;<\/i><br \/>\n<i>I will look back\u00a0<\/i><br \/>\n<i>into the lost morning<\/i><br \/>\n<i>in which I am moving, now,<\/i><br \/>\n<i>like a swimmer,<\/i><br \/>\n<i>so smoothly,<\/i><br \/>\n<i>so peacefully,<\/i><br \/>\n<i>I am almost the lily &#8212;<\/i><br \/>\n<i>almost the\u00a0bird vanishing over the water<\/i><br \/>\n<i>on its sleeves of night.<\/i><br \/>\n<i><br \/>\n<\/i><br \/>\n<i>At Great Pond<\/i><br \/>\nMary Oliver<br \/>\n<i><br \/>\n<\/i><br \/>\n<i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most summers for the last ten years or so we have rented a farmhouse in New York for a week during the summer.
